Welcome Baby Genevieve~Charlotte area Newborn Photographer

I absolutely LOVE capturing newborn photos.  I love newborn babies and their sweet smells, their subtle movements and tiny squawks–every little thing about them is miraculous. This sweet little thing came to the studio and I was all too excited to capture her adorableness and beauty.  Since moving to Gastonia, NC from Milwaukee, WI it has been quite a transition getting the studio prepared for my littlest clients, but every session allows to me to tweak things just so to better serve my southern clients.

This mommy texted me to let me know that her little miracle arrived and I was SO happy to be able to get her into the studio the exact day I flew back to Wisconsin to photograph a wedding. Since I love photographing newborn babies within the first ten days of life, this was perfect timing! Just look at how gorgeous this little one is!

Session Packages

When clients book their Newborn Sessions with KatieRie Photography, they choose between three packages (Classic, Deluxe, and Premium).  Your proof gallery will be presented with MORE images than your package states, so you get to choose your favorites (the amount depends on which package you choose) PLUS you have the option to purchase more files. clients purchase more images or the entire gallery.  Genevieve was SO ADORABLE in ALL of her images, mom and dad had difficulty choosing which images to keep.  I can see why! Can’t you?

What to Bring to your Session

Often times parents ask if they need to bring anything for their session.  The answer is–NO! The studio is STOCKED with the softest fabrics for layers, wraps, bonnets and headbands–all handmade specifically for newborn photography.  Nothing but the best for my little VIP clients! Parents have access to a whole wardrobe for their tiny one. A few favorite vendors I love to work with are A Bit Of String (she handmade the tiny bear in the photos above), Baby Bliss Props and Vanilla Lullaby (headbands). Props, layers and wraps are chosen to compliment the sweet baby, not overpower her presence. I love using soft neutral colors that will stand the test of time hanging in your beautiful home.

Not only was baby beautiful, but this whole family was absolutely stunning! This little family of three is both gorgeous AND kind, and I was super thrilled to be able to work with them in preserving their memories forever.

The Secrets Behind Newborn Photography

When I first started out in my photography career about ten years ago, I was drawn to capturing moments that grasped the feeling one felt in that exact time-period. I LOVED that challenge! And I still do! It’s why I love photographing families and babies! However–when I started Newborn Photography about five years ago–this was a whole new ball of wax.  Oh my GOODNESS. I had NO IDEA the time, the commitment, the patience, the money that was behind this craft…and I was intrigued…

Precious Moments Captured ~ Charlotte Family Photography

Though I still LOVE capturing these treasured family moments,  I find a sense of  great pride when I orchestrate a newborn photo session that I nail on the head. To me, this form of photography is the most challenging…and rewarding. Why?! I’m so glad you asked…

Newborn Photography 101:

It takes a lot of TIME & PATIENCE

Newborn photo sessions take a lot of time. From the consultations, to the session, to the editing, to the final product–these sessions take many, many hours to perfect so that you, the client have gorgeous works of art. Sessions last anywhere from 1-4 hours (depending on which package), however, this is only the beginning of the experience.  Editing takes a great deal of time because newborn skin can be worse than a teenager’s!  Flaky skin, jaundice, baby acne are just some of many things that are fixed during editing.  Editing can take up to five weeks because each image is a work of art. I absolutely LOVE the focus that goes into having a successful session.  It’s what DRIVES me to be best I can be.

It takes a lot of TRAINING (and MONEY)

Guys…I realize…EVERYONE is searching for the BEST deal out there. For EVERYTHING. For toilet paper, for school supplies, for mortgages, for wine (ah-hem). Can I just tell you that with newborn photography, this is the ONE place you should not skimp?! This person is being trusted with your most prized possession. This tiny miracle grew inside of you for ten long months!! This is NOT the time to bargain shop. At. All.  Look for someone who is trained. Who  continually invests in his/her education on a regular basis. Someone who is not desperate to gain clientele. This is the person who will treat you like you are family and who will value your sweet little nugget like their own.

When I decided to truly invest in my newborn photo career, I realized I needed to take the plunge (deep monetary plunge) and learn from the best in the business.  To me, this was Amy McDaniel of Dewdrops Photography. I loved her style, her colors, the props and layers that she used; to me, she was/is the whole package. I searched to see if she offered workshops–and BOOM! She did. I was living in Milwaukee at the time and was itching to go some place warm, and there I saw it.  She was going to be in Charlotte (my future CITY!).  So I invested a small fortune in my business and myself. I learned SO MUCH from this amazingly selfless woman.

During this initial workshop, I learned how to safely pose these precious babies and how to edit to perfection. I soaked in how to soothe and comfort babies so much that nearly every parent has named me the “Baby Whisperer” (haha!). I also learned how to market my business so that I attract clients that are the right fit for what I offer.  This was the best decision I ever made for my business.  And now every year, about 20 newborn photographers from across the country meet in Panama City Beach to learn and network from each other.  Each of these ladies continue to push me to be the best version of myself in this business.  I also continue to learn and grow from many other talented photographers from around the world.  What an amazing job I have! *sigh*

Welcome to the World, Sweet Lily!

Charlotte, NC Newborn Photos
Light, airy, & organic style

Lily’s mommy reached out looking for a newborn photographer whose style was light, airy and organic style . I was PUMPED because this is a perfect description of my images! Needless to say, we hit it off right away. Lily made her entrance into this world in August and came to the studio when she was eight days old–this is (mostly) my “sweet spot” for newborns.  Y’all. She was a DREAM! We were able to move from pose to pose with ease–I keep the studio super warm and comfortable so the babies (like Lily) stay sleepy and snug throughout the entire session. Even parents comment how they could fall asleep! Just look at all the cuteness that was captured!

Charlotte, NC Newborn PhotosMy studio is equipped with all different wraps, textures and props–no need to bring a THING! I mean–look at these delicate headbands! I have TONS of gorgeous pieces that are handmade specifically for baby photos.  The headbands used during Lily’s session were made by my beautiful friend over at Vanilla Lullaby isn’t the detail amazing? Perfect little bows and delicate flowers–stunning on little baby girls.

During the session, I was able to get many different looks, colors and textures. Just look how beautiful baby Lily is in the creams, greens and purples! Mommy was very pleased to see so much variety in her gallery. Gorgeous works of art that will be hung throughout this family’s home. Images that capture how incredibly precious and gorgeous this sweet little nugget is.

Welcome to the WORLD, Baby Waylon!

Do you know why I truly love my job? As a newborn photographer, I get to capture the very first moments of life.  Those monumental moments where two parents are promoted from being a couple to a family; or those moments where the first born child becomes a sibling for the very first time. I get to capture life-changing stages so YOU can look back and savor the feeling you felt during that exact moment. Isn’t that amazing?!

Baby Waylon came to the studio to see me in the beginning of July.  Mom contacted me for a mini newborn photography session and I was so excited to get my hands on this sweet baby! Mom was referred to me by sweet baby Ellis’ mom–both boys’ moms work together and became first time moms within a few short months–how cool is that?! They have each other to text in the middle of the night during feeding sessions!

Waylon’s mom wanted simple, fresh, and organic with a touch of drama–which describes my style exactly. I love focusing on the sweet details of the baby without pulling focus with huge hats or anything that would over-power baby’s features. Since Waylon’s gallery was a Classic (Mini) Session, his session lasted about an hour and there were a handful of beautiful set-ups.  Just look at the cuteness that was captured:

Waylon was so sweet and sleepy! We were able to get so many sweet images! I tell parents the most ideal time to capture newborns is within the first ten days of life.  This way babies are still sleepy and transition from pose to pose with ease. However, sometimes, babies go through periods of cluster feeding during this time period.  If this happens, we just push the photo shoot out a few days to allow time for baby time to adjust to efficiently eating.

Isn’t he so sweet, cuddling that cute little bear? All my newborn props, wraps, bonnets, headbands, and outfits in the studio were handmade specifically for newborn photography–just like this little bear! I found him from an Etsy store called A Bit Of String–so cute, right?!

And finally our taste of drama…

What about you? Do you have questions about setting up a session? Let’s get a conversation going! I’d be happy to answer any of your questions.  I can’t wait to capture your life’s story.

What to Wear || KatieRie Photography || Charlotte Portrait Photographer

I just booked my session–Now what the heck do I wear?

Did I just read your mind? LOL! Figuring out what to wear for a session can be daunting, stressful, and tedious–but it doesn’t have to be.  So I decided to walk you through the process.

We recently had our family photos done by the AH-MAZING Twig and Olive Photography. They have been one of my photography “crushes,” for a very long time–I love their lighting, style, composition–everything! I get SUPER stoked when we book our family sessions because even in this busy life, it pauses time for just a moment and FOR ONCE I’m actually IN the photos. I get to let loose, have fun and interact with my littles and my husband and I’m not the one in charge–I hand over the reigns for a split second.

However, it also means the panic kicks in. Panic?! Yes Panic! About four months before our session I freak out as to what to wear! What is the weather going to be like? Will it rain? Will it be cold or chilly even if it’s June? What will I feel “good” wearing? How on earth will I tie everything together for five people? CRAP! I need to lose 20 pounds! As a photographer you would think this would be easy! Nope. It’s not. And every year I go through the same thing. And it’s a great reminder for me what my clients go through for their session. I understand the struggle and the stress and that’s why I’m here to help…

Step one: Choose a color palette.  One of my favorite things in life is Pinterest. I can find anything on Pinterest. Inspiration for my living room, what to wear for date night (what the heck is date night anways?!), Fall fashion, how to boil an egg, paint colors for bedrooms, inspirational memes–you name it, Pinterest has it. Think of your photoshoot like a room you are going to decorate.  Find a color palette on Pinterest to ignite the inspiration for your shoot.  This is the palette I chose this year: About 9 months ago, I purchased these beautiful skirts for my girls that were exactly that mustard color from the palette. I KNEW they would LOVE these skirts (I did too, of course) and I knew they would feel like princesses. I had my first inspirational pieces, so all I had to do was find colors and clothing that would compliment these skirts.

Step Two: Right away, find an outfit that YOU love.  That’s right YOU.  YOU are the top priority.  You need to feel beautiful and comfortable in whichever outfit you choose.  I think I bought 3-4 different dresses from all over and finally decided on one from Target.  Actually the girls decided on that dress when I tried it on they both said “you look SO BEAUTIFUL, Mommy!” Sold. In that moment, I felt like a princess too.

TIP: Stores like Old Navy, Gap, H&M, Target color coordinate outfits for everyone in the family.  Take a look at what they are displaying for the season!

Step Three: Think of mixing different textures and patterns. It’s just like decorating. Mixing patterns is great, but don’t overdue it, otherwise it can be too busy. Think of things that compliment each other.  My dress had a lot going on–different colors and flowers–so I knew I had to keep the other outfits lowkey.  For the girls, I chose a plain navy blue tank top and a yellow floral crown (from Amazon). TIP: I’m OBSESSED with ordering off of Amazon because I can have it to my house super fast and there are easy returns–that’s a win/win in my book!

For the boys, I searched Etsy for some help.  I wanted something that was classic and that tied everything together–bowties.  Gahhhhh! bowties! I adore bowties–I think they are classic and vintage-y and absolutely adorable. The easiest thing was to put the men in navy blue shirts (with light patterns) and search for mustard bow ties to tie that color into their outfits as well. Amazon didn’t have many choices in this department, but I found the PERFECT bowties on Etsy!! Check out The Dapper Dude Co! I ordered these brown leather suspenders and Daddy and son matching bowties! SO FLIPPING ADORABLE! You could LEGIT get carried away with all this cuteness.

Step Four: Accessorize! Think of jewelry, flower crowns (you can find a TON on Etsy and/or Amazon), scarves, sweaters.  All these things can add splashes of color or patterns without going overboard. I also found my necklace on Etsy.  It’s so dainty and perfect and really tied the yellow together perfectly for my outfit.  TIP: Make sure you read the shipping information for the Etsy store. This necklace was coming all the way from England, so I had to order it about a month in advance!

Step Five: Have FUN! I LOVE playing dress-up and primping.  I curl my hair, put on fake lashes, do “out-on-the-town” make-up. I curl the girls’ hair and put lip gloss on their cute little lips. This is your time to pamper yourself and your family. PLEASE try not to stress. If you plan everything well enough in advance, that should help keep things stress-free. Heck, even trying the outfits on about a week or two in advance will help eliminate stress! That way you have enough time to fix anything that doesn’t fit right.

See the final product below:)
